German Universities That Use the dMAT Directly (Not Just APS India)
Last updated 2026-09-14
Most of what's searched about the dMAT centers on the 2026 APS India requirement — but that's actually just one use case built on top of a broader test. g.a.s.t., the same organization that runs the dMAT for APS India, also licenses it directly to individual German universities as an admissions criterion in its own right, using subject-specific modules instead of the General Academic Module Indian applicants sit. If you're applying to one of these specific programmes, the dMAT matters to you for a completely different reason than APS documentation: here the score can decide whether you get a place, and missing the test can sink an application outright.
As of September 2026, d-mat.de names two universities using the dMAT this way: RWTH Aachen and the University of Göttingen.
RWTH Aachen — Battery Science and Technology in Engineering (M.Sc.)
RWTH Aachen uses a dMAT subject module directly in its admissions formula for this programme, which is capacity-limited (Numerus Clausus). Per the university's own published selection criteria, your dMAT result counts for 80% of your selection score, with your bachelor's degree grade making up the remaining 20% — a far heavier weighting than a supporting document. RWTH explains the admissions cap by the programme's intensive, research-driven teaching: students are placed directly into ongoing research projects, so places are limited. The programme offers dedicated dMAT subject modules in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, aligned to its interdisciplinary curriculum.
The rules that catch applicants out
- No dMAT result means 0 points, not a pending file. RWTH states that if proof of the test hasn't been submitted by the application deadline or the deadline for late documents, the test goes into the ranking with a score of zero. With the test worth 80% of the ranking, that effectively rules you out of a competitive, capped programme, even with an excellent bachelor's grade.
- The GRE is a separate, additional requirement. RWTH requires applicants from third countries (outside the EU) to submit a GRE General Test result as well. For Indian applicants, the dMAT does not replace the GRE here. You need both.
- Test dates follow RWTH's cycle, not APS India's. For Winter Semester 2026/27 applications, RWTH pointed applicants to dMAT dates on 19 March 2026 and 9 June 2026. Those are months before the 26 September 2026 India date that APS India applicants are working toward. The programme starts in the winter semester only, so the test window for each intake falls in the spring and early summer before it.
- You still need the right prior degree. Admission requires a first degree with suitable background in the natural sciences or engineering, as defined in the programme's examination regulations. The examination board decides whether you meet it, and a strong dMAT score doesn't change that.
A worked scenario
Take an Indian B.Tech Electrical Engineering graduate aiming for RWTH's Winter Semester 2027/28 intake. From RWTH's own page, that applicant needs a dMAT subject-module result submitted by RWTH's deadline, a GRE General Test result, and a degree the examination board accepts as relevant preparation. Because an Electrical Engineering degree also falls under APS India's affected fields, the same applicant faces APS India's separate dMAT requirement (General Academic Module) for their APS documentation.
The official sources don't say whether one dMAT sitting can cover both the RWTH subject module and the APS India General Academic Module. Don't assume it can. Email g.a.s.t. (kontakt@gast.de) before booking, and check RWTH's programme page for the next cycle's test dates. RWTH hadn't published dates for the 2027/28 intake when this page was last checked.
Göttingen — Applied Data Science (M.Sc.)
The University of Göttingen plans to let applicants submit a dMAT Data Science result for its Applied Data Science M.Sc., replacing its previous online aptitude test, starting with the Summer Semester 2027 intake. The university's last update on this (dated 18 June 2026) describes it as planned and still subject to final approval by the relevant university bodies, not yet a locked-in requirement. Even once active, the test is optional. Göttingen says applicants who don't take it are still considered, but that a good result is an advantage in a competitive selection.
What this means for the Summer Semester 2027 intake specifically
- The relevant dMAT date has already passed. Göttingen states that the dMAT test date that counted for Summer Semester 2027 applications was in early June 2026. If you're applying for that intake and didn't sit the dMAT Data Science then, you can't add a result now.
- The application deadline is 1 November 2026 for all applicants. Göttingen says its Summer Semester 2027 portal opens in early October.
- Use the correct portal, or the application is invalid. Göttingen runs separate portals for international and EU/EEA applicants. An Indian national with an Indian bachelor's degree belongs in the international portal. The university warns that an application filed in the wrong portal won't be valid.
- The rest of the file is online. Göttingen asks for scanned degree certificates and transcripts, a tabular CV, proof of English proficiency, and a motivation letter of up to 300 words. No original documents are needed at the application stage.
The selection section of Göttingen's page still describes the older procedure: a 40-minute online test in mathematics, statistics and computer science, followed by video interviews for shortlisted applicants. The page doesn't yet say exactly how Summer Semester 2027 applicants without a dMAT result will be assessed. The university says it will publish confirmation, so check its application page again before the portal opens.
Planning for later intakes
Göttingen warns that because g.a.s.t. schedules dMAT dates independently, a usable test date can fall several months before the application deadline. If you're targeting Winter Semester 2027/28 or later, check the dMAT dates as soon as they're published and work backwards. The early-June date for Summer Semester 2027 shows how early the test can come. g.a.s.t. publishes preparation material for the Data Science module on d-mat.de.
Why this matters if you're not applying to either programme
For the vast majority of Indian applicants affected by the 2026 APS India dMAT mandate, none of the above changes anything — you still sit the General Academic Module described throughout this site. This page exists for a narrower audience: applicants specifically targeting a programme that uses a subject-specific dMAT module for direct admission, where the stakes, weighting and registration timeline are set by the university itself rather than by APS India. If that's not your situation, the dMAT overview and eligibility pages are the more relevant starting point. For how the 0–200 score and percentile rank on the certificate work, see dMAT scoring.
g.a.s.t. adds new subject modules and university partnerships over time — check d-mat.de directly for the current list before assuming this page is exhaustive.
Does this affect me if I'm only applying through APS India?
No. If you're not applying to one of the specific programmes that uses a dMAT subject module directly, you still sit the standard General Academic Module described throughout this site, and none of this changes your process.
Is the dMAT scoring different for these direct-admission programmes?
The scoring mechanics (0-200 scale, percentile rank) are the same, but how heavily it's weighted is set by the individual university rather than being informational-only the way it typically is for APS India applicants — RWTH Aachen, for example, counts it for 80% of its selection score.
What happens if I apply to RWTH Battery Science without a dMAT result?
Your application isn't rejected outright, but RWTH states that if proof of the test isn't in by the application or document-submission deadline, the test is counted as 0 points. Since the test makes up 80% of the selection score, that leaves only your bachelor's grade (20%) competing for a capacity-limited place.
Can I use the dMAT Data Science for Göttingen's Summer Semester 2027 intake?
Realistically, no. Göttingen's own application page says the dMAT date relevant to Summer Semester 2027 applications already took place in early June 2026. The university also says applicants without a dMAT result are still considered.
How do I find out if a German university I'm applying to uses the dMAT directly?
Check that specific university's own admissions page for your programme. g.a.s.t. licenses dMAT subject modules to individual universities over time, so this isn't something APS India tracks or publishes — the university's own admissions criteria are the authoritative source.
